Thanks for the comments Monk and Rob. There is certainly a need to not cover your content in cheesy ads, it can definitely be a turn off. However, I think there is value in offering ads before you get to the 1000 hit mark. As for what's the rush, the sooner you have ads the sooner you make money. However, if you have a very new site, I agree you should build some content/traffic. The more traffic, inbound links, and pages your site has, the better rate you can negotiate.

Thanks for the reply Rob, we agree on good content.

I took a look at your site, you do about as good as job as anyone I’ve seen. I would recommend anyone that is getting a significant amount of traffic, that they use Rob’s blog and this blog here (baseblog) as a model for advertising.

I’d still recommend that a new blogger wait until he has enough traffic to justify their presence, what's the rush?

With all due respect to MonkMojo, in my opinion, good content is good content, regardless of whether there are ads on a site. I've never stopped visiting a site because it takes advertising, especially non-obtrusive sidebar ads. (Pop ups are a whole different story.)

If there's good content, I'll be back.

I think a lot of new bloggers have a misconception about being able to make money with ads. You should have 1000 – 2000 good hits per day before contaminating your site with ads. If you got this kind of traffic, it’s because you are pumping out good content, and ads won’t deter people from visiting.

Having ads while you are trying to build a following is a bad idea. They are irritating and damage the image / appearance of your blog.
